Why your mum shouldn’t be your wedding co-ordinator

Months of planning have gone into your wedding day, and your mum has been there every step of the way, she knows every detail and wants everything to run smoothly, but surely she deserves to enjoy the day herself, without running around making sure everything goes to plan? That’s why your mum shouldn’t be your wedding co-ordinator.

From our experience at weddings it often ends up being the people who care the most about you and your day who end up working it.

Whether it’s your Mum or your Bridesmaids, your Aunties or the Groomsmen these guests should be celebrating the day with you, not leaving feeling like they have worked a 12 hour shift.

You planned this wedding. Now let someone else manage it.

Here’s something a lot of couples don’t fully think through until it’s almost too late: planning a wedding and coordinating a wedding on the day are two completely different things.

You may have spent months (or years) organising every detail. The way the venue looks, the time you want the speeches to start, where you want the photobooth set up, the music you walk in to and the dietary requirements for table seven. You’ve done an incredible job, but on the wedding day, you want that responsibility handed over. Someone needs to be the person who holds all of that together behind the scenes, answers the questions, deals with issues, and makes sure everything you planned actually happens.

And that person should not be someone you love.

What your mum should actually be doing on your wedding day

Your mum should be getting ready with you, glass of something lovely in hand, fully present for one of the most important mornings of your life.

She should be walking into the venue and actually seeing it properly for the first time, not rushing ahead to review the table plan or check on the caterers.

She should be chatting to family, laughing with your friends, crying happy tears during the ceremony, and dancing at the reception.

She should not be fielding calls from the florist, finding out where the buttonholes are, chasing the DJ, or working out how to ensure the speeches start on time.

The same goes for you, your bridesmaids, your siblings, your best friends. They love you, but they are your guests. They deserve to enjoy the day too.

What’s the alternative?

That’s where a wedding co-ordinator comes in. At Occasion Queens, we step in before your wedding day to learn everything about your plans. We meet with you, go through all the details, get to know your suppliers, and build a full picture of how your day is supposed to run.

On the day itself, we’re there early. While you’re in hair and makeup we’re at the venue making sure everything is being set up exactly as you planned. When suppliers arrive, they come to us. When something needs adjusting, we handle it. When your Auntie Jen needs finding for the family photos, we will track her down.

Your suppliers know to come to us, your timeline is in our hands, and any curveballs get dealt with before you even know they happened.

We fluff dresses. We pick confetti out of hair. We cue the ceremony music. We make sure the first dance starts on time, the evening runs smoothly, and nothing falls through the cracks.

You planned the wedding. On the day we make it happen.

What we want for you

We want you to enjoy the day you planned, no clock-watching or worrying about the details, that’s our job. Trust us, no matter how well you’ve planned, the day will throw something at you. Here’s what one of our brides, Naomi, had to say:

Naturally there will be curve balls thrown at you on the day and having wedding coordinators meant they were all taken care of, and I didn’t even have to think or worry about them. One example of many, I forgot my bouquet and they sorted everything without any delays or panic, and no one ever knew“.
